Girl Power: Important Women in Dentistry

Women in Dentistry | Walbridge DentalMarch is Women’s History Month! Like many other professions, women had work hard to make it in  in the field of dentistry. Before the 1970s only 3.3 percent of dentists in the United States were women, according to the University of Michigan. Today, nearly half of dental students and a quarter of practicing dentists are women! Women are making huge strides in this industry and in this blog, we will explore some of the most important women in dentistry who helped to shape the field as we know it.

In 1866, Lucy Beaman Hobbs Taylor was the first woman to recieve a Doctorate of Dental Science. And, she graduated right here in Ohio from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery!

Emeline Roberts Jones was nationally recognized at the 1893 Columbian Dental Congress as the first female dentist.

In 1914, Gillette Hayden and Grace Rogers Spalding founded the American Academy of Periodontology. In 1916, Hayden became the first female president of the organization.

M. Evangeline Jordan is known for her work in pediatric dentistry and her techniques for reducing dental fear in young patients. In 1921, she became the first president of the American Association of Women Dentists.

Sara Gdulin Krout became the first female dentist in the Navy in 1944.
