Top 6 Preventative Dental Care Tips

Many adults experience significant dental problems – don’t let yourself become one of them. Practicing the following preventative dental care tips will help you develop strong teeth and healthy gums, and will contribute to your overall good health.

Brush regularly – You should brush your teeth thoroughly with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. If you want to do even better, brush after every meal. When you can’t brush, at least thoroughly rinse your mouth.

Floss regularly – You should make flossing part of your daily oral hygiene program. Flossing is an essential preventative dental care activity. If you have difficulty flossing, talk with Dr. Matt or Dr. Jody about what kind of interdental cleaner might work for you.

Eat tooth-healthy foods – Eat nutritious and balanced meals. Be sure your diet includes foods that protect your teeth, such as cheese, fruits, and vegetables. Limit snacks, and avoid carbohydrates such as candy, pretzels, and chips, which can remain on the tooth surface.

Consider dental sealants – Ask Dr. Matt or Dr. Jody whether dental sealants are appropriate for you. A dental sealant is a plastic protective coating applied to the chewing surface of back teeth to help prevent decay. They seal off nooks and crannies where food can become easily trapped.

Drink fluoridated water – Most cities add fluoride to the tap water supply. Drinking water with fluoride in it helps protect your teeth. Tap water is a much better choice than sugar-sweetened beverages, and choosing it is a very simple preventative dental care step.
