Importance of Getting Oral Cancer Screenings

It’s just as important to make sure that your mouth tissues are healthy as it is to check the teeth and make sure that they are free of decay and disease. The incidence of oral cancer is low, but the prognosis on it when found is not great, so it is very important for patients to have this service performed. An oral cancer screening is a simple evaluation, but one that we feel is really important for each and every patient, and critical to treating the patient as a whole, not just a set of teeth.

What to Expect

During an oral cancer screening, we will examine the cheeks, lips, tongue, roof and floor of your mouth and look for anything out of the ordinary. The process is fairly quick and painless. If we do find a questionable area, we refer it to the oral surgeon for biopsy and treatment.

Not only do we look for cancerous lesions, but also any evidence of pathology, which could be an infectious process, such as Candida (Thrush), or something as simple as cheek chewing.  We also frequently see changes in the tissues associated with chewing tobacco, and will make the necessary recommendations to quit.
