Gingivitis and Periodontal Awareness<\/b><\/h2>\n

If you continually neglect your teeth,\u00a0you have an increased risk of developing gum disease. The two types of gum disease you should be aware of are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is caused when a thin coating of bacterial film, called plaque, covers your teeth and progresses into an infection. This is the mildest form of gum disease.<\/p>\n

When a bacterial infection spreads further and causes a separation between your gum and moorings, this encourages more bacteria to grow and results in periodontal disease. The most severe cases happen when more than 30% of your mouth is infected. This often leads to tooth loss and increased infection throughout the mouth.<\/p>\n

Pregnant Women with Periodontal Disease is Bad News<\/b><\/h2>\n

Recent developments have shown that the risk of premature birth is eight times more likely for pregnant women who have periodontal disease. When your body fights off the infection, it releases reacting molecules called cytokines and prostaglandins, which are also the same molecules that tell the uterus when it\u2019s time to deliver.<\/p>\n
